My internship experience at Higginson Strategy

Back to News + Views

My internship at Higginson Strategy gave me a front-row seat to the world of purpose-driven communications and public affairs. I got stuck into client campaigns, drafting press releases, building media lists, and creating social media content. What quickly became clear was how strategic every element had to be—each press release, post, and outreach effort was meticulously crafted to align with campaign objectives and deliver clients results.

The work demanded staying constantly plugged into current affairs. I learned that understanding the broader context clients operate in isn’t just helpful—it’s essential to delivering effective communications. My History degree came in handy here, helping me contextualise policy debates and develop more nuanced takes on complex issues.

The real highlight was working across campaigns for non-profit organisations and private sector clients making tangible impact. From supporting The Legends Agency’s mission to drive economic growth in South Africa to championing the BBIA’s work in the industrial bioeconomy, I saw how different sectors tackle change. Watching communications shift conversations and influence decision-makers in real time made the work incredibly rewarding.

I was also lucky to work with a team genuinely invested in helping me grow. Whenever I had questions, someone was there to support me. The supportive atmosphere gave me the confidence to take on new challenges and push outside my comfort zone.

I’m grateful to Higginson Strategy for the experience and excited to carry these lessons into the next chapter of my career.
