Looking for an internship can be a long process, and there are many factors to consider to find the right fit for you. This summer, I spent a month interning for Higginson Strategy as part of my master’s program, and I was lucky to find dedicated co-workers and a welcoming culture. If you’re wondering if Higginson is the right place for you, here are three things I loved about working for this London and Manchester-based boutique agency.
The Fast-Paced Environment
During my time at Higginson Strategy, I was never bored. There was always something to do and my co-workers were happy to ask for support on projects. I was able to get experience doing a variety of tasks such as press releases, media lists, client briefings and sell-ins. I truly enjoyed knowing that the work I did every day would be valuable to the agency. Many of Higginson’s clients are in the environmental and sustainability spaces, which made me feel like I was making a positive impact with the work I was doing.
The Culture
The culture at Higginson Strategy is positive and collaborative. While the account executives are part of different client teams, everyone works seamlessly across the agency to make sure that everything is completed, and the work is top-notch. When there are periods of high stress, it brings the Higginson team together rather than creating a toxic environment. Clients are top priority, and employees work together to help and support each other on various tasks and pick up anything that needs to be done. However, having a work-life balance is important at Higginson. While every employee has a “can do” attitude and is passionate about the work they’re doing, they are good about making sure you take a break during the day, whether that’s enjoying your lunch on the roof terrace with co-workers or taking a walk around the block in the afternoon.
The Learning Opportunities
Doing great work is important at Higginson Strategy, and the team makes sure you have the tools to succeed. Once a month, an employee does a “Higginson Hack”, during which they advise on how to best succeed in the Communications field. Most recently, the Higginson Hack was on how to successfully pitch stories. Another activity that the company does is “Higginson Academy”, where an external speaker is invited to present on an interesting topic and an afternoon full of team bonding activities. Everyone at Higginson is knowledgeable about the PR and Public Affairs field, and I was able to grow so much just in the month that I worked there. I can say without a doubt I know more than I did when I started.
Overall, I had a great experience at Higginson Strategy. I felt my work was valued and appreciated, the team was inclusive, supportive, dedicated and talented, and I loved being able to learn more about Communications on the job. Higginson Strategy is a great place to work, and I am glad I got the chance to intern there.
