The Story:
Glasgow will host the delayed Cop26 climate talks in November and is gaining worldwide attention with its ambitious tree-planting project.
The Clyde Climate Forest project will last over the next ten years. Once completed, it will increase tree cover in urban areas of Glasgow to 20% and ensure that a fifth of the region’s rural landscape is forested or planted with native woodland.
The hope from the project is that it will help the city combat the effects of climate change with trees able to soak up excess water from excessive rain and shade it from heatwaves.
Higginson says:
This is excellent news in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. Studies have shown that trees can lower temperatures in cities, prevent flooding and provide a home for many different species. We’re hoping to see more big green announcements from cities across the UK before the year is out.
