The UN Treaty on Plastic
The story:
This week, the UN approved a resolution to create the world’s first global plastic pollution treaty in Nairobi. Commentators have said it is the most powerful step in protecting the planet since the Paris Accord seven years ago.
Work will now begin to set out legally binding rules on plastic waste which should be finalised by the end of 2024.
Our view:
This pact wouldn’t have been achieved without NGOs, politicians and businesses working together over the past year through the Ocean Plastic Leadership Network dialogues. A huge thank you to all those who took part.
But this is just the start. The hard work will occur over the next two years when the full weight of the fossil fuel industry try to water down the treaty itself which must include national plastic reduction targets.
