The Girl Generation

Breaking the silence surrounding FGM

What we did

Challenge

Charity The Girl Generation has resolved to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in a generation but has struggled to get its voice heard in 10 countries across Africa.

Solution

Higginson supported The Girl Generation to deliver the first pan-African Youth Summit dedicated to ending FGM, attended by young people from across 17 countries. By mobilising activists, Higginson helped them turn their vision into a clear communications strategy and then delivered it.

Outcome

Higginson helped break the silence that surrounds FGM by securing regional, national, and international print and broadcast coverage across Africa and worldwide. The social media campaign #IHaveSpoken has been seen by over seven million people, and celebrities and political figures across the continent have publicly pledged to support for the campaign.

“We’re so excited to watch this movement grow from the minds of young activists in Africa to a million voices all around the world. These young people are taking action by shattering the silence that surrounds FGM. By inviting and inspiring others to join the movement, they take a giant leap forward towards creating a world that is safer for our girls.”
